The Medical Center Alumni Society recognizes distinguished alumni who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in their careers at an awards ceremony held each spring. Current medical students who have shown outstanding talent and promise during their Medical School careers are recognized during the annual Graduation Luncheon and Awards Ceremony, typically held the day before Medical School commencement.
Nominations for the following year’s alumni and student awards are accepted during the current year. To be eligible for consideration, completed nominations must be postmarked by July 15. Full details regarding the nomination process for these awards is available by clicking HERE.

Distinguished Alumnus Achievement Award
This Medical Center Alumni Society award honors U-M Medical School alumni (M.D., resident, fellow or Ph.D.) or faculty members who have typified the Michigan tradition of excellence and have brought credit to the University by their personal accomplishment and professional achievement, and recognizes significant contributions in the science and art of medicine.
Distinguished Alumnus Service Award
This Medical Center Alumni Society award honors U-M Medical School alumni (M.D., resident, fellow or Ph.D.) or faculty members who exemplify the Michigan tradition of excellence and have brought credit to the University and their profession through their professional achievements and/or humanitarian service to the welfare of mankind.
Early Distinguished Career Achievement Award
This Medical Center Alumni Society award honors U-M Medical School alumni (M.D., resident, fellow or Ph.D.) or faculty members who exemplify the Michigan tradition of excellence through exemplary achievement in medical education, research, or patient care in the initial 20 years of their career.
MCAS By-laws Related to Awards
- MCAS Awards nominations are solicited by the chair of the MCAS Awards and Nominating Committee from the dean and faculty of the Medical School , the executive director of the University Hospitals and Health Centers , members of the MCAS board and the membership at large.
- Letters of nomination are requested from those submitting nominations outlining the reasons for the nominations and the candidates' achievements. In addition, letters of nomination must specify whether or not the nominations may be carried forward for a year if the candidates are not selected that year.
- MCAS Awards are granted by a majority vote of the MCAS Awards and Nominating Committee.
- MCAS Awards may not be given to those currently serving on the MCAS board, to those currently serving as an officer or employee of the U-M Alumni Association, or to an individual who is a regent or officer of the University. Current faculty and staff of the University are usually not considered for an award; they may be considered under exceptional and merited circumstances.

Nomination Process for MCAS Distinguished Alumni Award
To nominate someone for an MCAS Distinguished Award, please complete ONE nomination form (PDF), attach TWO letters of recommendation and ONE curriculum vitae. Once the nomination is complete with the above mentioned requirements, send it to our office via postal mail. (See address below.) Nominations must be postmarked by July 15. Note: We are unable to submit incomplete nomination packets for consideration.
Student Awards
The Alumni Society presents three student awards annually, one to a second-year student, one to a third-year student and one to a graduating student.
The MCAS Scholarship Service Awards are presented to one second-year and one third-year medical student. All students in their sophomore and junior years of Medical School at the University of Michigan are eligible for the awards. Award nominations must be submitted by January 31 of the student’s sophomore or junior year. The awards, which consist of a certificate of merit and $2,000, will be presented at the Senior Luncheon in May.
The MCAS Academic Achievement Award is presented to the graduating senior who has achieved the highest academic standing in his or her class. The award, which consists of a certificate of merit and $2,000, will be presented at the Senior Luncheon in May.
MCAS By-Laws Related to Student Awards
MCAS Student Awards:
Applicants shall be considered on the following basis:
- service to the Medical School
- service to the Health System
- service to the University
- service to the community at-large
- scholarship, if otherwise similarly qualified students apply
Nomination for an MCAS Student Award may be made by:
- the executive leadership of the Medical School
- a faculty member of the Medical School
- a member of the Alumni Society Board
- the MCAS membership at-large
- a fellow classmate
- the student himself or herself
Each nominee must submit an application and two letters of recommendation. Application materials are distributed by the MCAS office. Completed applications and letter(s) of reference are collected by the MCAS office and distributed to members of the Awards and Nominating Committee.
MCAS Academic Achievement Award:
This award is presented, on the recommendation of the faculty of the Medical School, to the graduating senior who has achieved the highest academic standing in his or her class.

Emeritus Medallion — Honoring 50 Years in Medicine

The Emeritus/Emerita Medallion recognizes University of Michigan Medical School graduates who completed their medical education at the University of Michigan 50 or more years ago.
The medallion honors their many years of service to medicine and their myriad contributions to the University through their volunteer service and their gifts to support the University of Michigan Health System’s missions, as one of America’s leading academic health institutions, in teaching, research and clinical care.
